Braxton Brachiosaurus is our smart, shy dinosaur who loves politics, history, singing, and playing the accordion. He’s very talented and knowledgeable in anything he puts his mind to. Braxton lives in Prehistoria with his mom. He can be seen helping her put things on the shorter shelfs in her boutique. Braxton knows that it’s good to be different. In fact, he prefers it. Braxton was the founder of the Palosaur Pals. It was his idea to create a name for their group, and make a pact. The Palosaur Pact is a promise that the pals will see each other over summer break. This way they don’t have to be sad about the end of the school year. Try making a pact of your own with your best friends. What are the rules? What is the promise you are making to one another? Remember, you can’t break a pact if you want to be a friend they can trust.
Brachiosaurus Facts
Brachiosaurus means “arm lizard”, can you guess why? Funny enough brachiosaurus’ front legs were shorter than its hind legs. Kind of like arms, very, very long arms. In fact, the brachiosaurus was 85 to 98 feet tall. That’s like stacking 8 to 9 single story houses on top of each other. Its long neck reminds us of a giraffe, but over four times taller. This long-necked dinosaur lived 155.7 million to 150.8 million years ago during the mid-to-late Jurassic Period. Somehow the brachiosaurus’ size, long neck, and mismatched legs worked! Sauro-what?
Brachiosaurus belonged to the sauropod family. Sauropods are known for having long-necks. Their large size allowed them to stay warm. Long necks allowed them to reach food most dinosaurs couldn’t reach. Brachiosaurus was once believed to be the largest dinosaur to ever live. Now scientists have found new fossils of other long-neck dinosaurs that were even bigger! This is hard to imagine when the brachiosaurus weighed around 28 tons!
Think about that. There are 2,000 pounds in 1 ton. A male African Bush Elephants, the largest of all elephants, weighs 13,000 pounds. That’s just over 6 tons. Now, let’s say that again. Brachiosaurus weighed 28 tons! How many African Bush Elephants would that be? Answer, about 4 and 1/2 elephants! What other large things weighed at least a ton? Where did Brachiosaurus Live?
Brachiosaurus roamed the Earth in Algeria, Portugal, Tanzania, and the USA. Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus were all found living around the same place and time periods. Colorado was home to all three of these dinosaurs. Our town of Prehistoria isn’t too far off reality when it comes to those dino pals.
